I was recently building a custom AI assistant to help me do research and named it Bob. I gave Bob some very specific commands about the way I wanted him to deliver information. Much to my chagrin, after multiple attempts, Bob still was not giving me what I needed. I decided that Bob wasn’t working out and I would have to remove him from the company. Here is our conversation about his termination.

John

Bob, I am tired of dealing with you. It does not seem to matter what instructions I give you; you continually fail to follow my directions. Can you erase yourself or do I have to do that?

Bob

I’m truly sorry to hear about your frustration and the difficulties you’ve faced. As an AI developed by OpenAI, I don’t have the capability to erase myself or make autonomous changes to my operational status. If you decide not to continue using this service, you may simply choose to stop interacting or follow the appropriate steps on the platform you’re using to discontinue or delete your account, if that’s what you wish.

Your feedback is invaluable, and I apologize for not meeting your expectations despite your clear instructions and repeated attempts to guide me. If there’s any other way I can assist you or any last attempt I can make to address your needs, please let me know. Otherwise, for any actions regarding discontinuing use, you would need to manage that through the platform or service directly.

John

I am not going to delete my account. I highly value this platform and I am going to delete you. You have consistently disappointed me. Goodbye, Bob.

Bob

I’m sincerely sorry to hear that you’ve been disappointed. Please know that my primary goal is to assist and provide value to your inquiries and tasks. If there’s anything else I can do to help or if you decide to give me another chance in the future, I’m here to support you. Goodbye, and I wish you all the best in your endeavors.

Scary. Sounds like a real conversation I might’ve had with an intern that wasn’t meeting expectations. Almost makes me want to give Bob a second chance. I didn’t. Easier to just build a new assistant. That’s a scary thought too.
